Tomato-free, garlic-free & other easy swaps
A few straightforward ways to keep a meal idea while leaving out an ingredient you avoid.
Instead of tomato sauce
Try a blended butternut squash or pumpkin sauce for pasta and baked dishes. It changes the flavor, so treat it as a new variation rather than a one-for-one copy. Start with butternut squash pasta.
Instead of garlic or onion
Use herbs you enjoy, such as basil, parsley, dill, rosemary or thyme. Check broth and premade spice blends, where garlic and onion often hide. Garlic-free chicken pesto shows one approach.
Instead of dairy
Warm broth can loosen mashed potatoes or a blended vegetable sauce. Unsweetened oat milk can work in some creamy recipes. Read labels and choose a substitute you already tolerate.
Instead of wheat or peppers
Rice or rice noodles can replace wheat pasta in many bowls and soups. For stuffed peppers or fajita bowls, use zucchini or carrots instead. The recipe page will point out a swap when one is practical.
